Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram (echo) is a diagnostic test of the heart using ultrasound technology so that health care providers can look at the structure and function of your heart. At UltraSound Associates USA, we use advanced imaging technology to evaluate, diagnose, and monitor health conditions. We offer echo tests to patients with concerns about their heart health.

An echocardiogram uses ultrasound, a harmless sound waves, to quickly and efficiently obtain valuable information about your heart. Your doctors regularly use an echocardiogram, or echo, when they have questions about the size, shape, and performance of your heart and its valves.

An echocardiogram uses a special device called a transducer that sends out sound waves. The waves bounce off the structures of your heart, creating an echo read by the transducer. A computer analyzes the echo and produces moving images of your heart for your care team.

Doctors might want to see an echocardiogram to investigate signs or symptoms of heart diseases, like shortness of breath, chest discomfort or swelling in the legs.

They might also order an echocardiogram if something abnormal, like a heart murmur, is detected during an exam. It can help them see if there’s been damage to the heart muscle, or a problem with a valve.

During the echo test, you’ll be asked to put on a hospital gown. You’ll lie on an exam table, and a sonographer will put some warm gel on the end of an ultrasound wand and move it along your chest. UltraSound Associates USA, reviews the images and sends a written report to your referring provider within 24 hours.
